Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Clinical Isolates at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal

چکیده
Objective: Increasing number of reports had documented the continued emergence of resistance among P. aeruginosa strains to common antimicrobial drugs, world-wide. This study investigated the antimicrobial resistance patterns of P. aeruginosa clinical isolates obtained from hospitalized patients. Methods: Between January 2012 and June 2012, one hundred and forty-five strains of P.aeruginosa were isolated from different clinical specimens and fully characterized by standard bacteriological procedures. Antimicrobial susceptibility patterns of each isolate was carried out by the KirbyBauer disk diffusion method as per guidelines of CLSI. Results: Majority of isolates of P.aeruginosa (120, 83.75%) were obtained from specimens of pus, sputum, urine and tracheal aspirates. The isolated pathogens showed resistance to amikacin (17.25%), ciprofloxacin (27.59%) and cefoperazone -sulbactum (34.48%). Resistance rates to Cotrimoxazole, piperacillin, ceftriaxone and chloramphenicol varied from 51.00% to 73.00%. All the isolates were susceptible to imipenem. 30 (20.69%) of P.aeruginosa isolates were multi-drug resistant. Conclusion: The results confirmed the occurrence of drug resistant strains of P.aeruginosa. Imipenem, amikacin, and ciprofloxacin were found to be the most effective antimicrobial drugs. It therefore calls for a very judicious, rational treatment regimens prescription by the physicians to limit the further spread of antimicrobial resistance among the P.aeruginosa strains.

Prevalence and In Vitro Antimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern of Non-Lactose Fermenting Gram Negative Bacteria Isolated in a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal
Background: Non-lactose fermenting gram negative bacteria are emerging as important human pathogens. This group of bacteria was earlier considered to be colonizers but are now frequently isolated from different clinical specimens and are responsible for a wide range of human infections especially in immune compromised hosts. The main purpose of our study was to determine the prevalence and role...
متن کاملAntimicrobial Susceptibility Pattern of Clinical Isolates of Pseudomonas Aeruginosa in a Pediatric Hospital
Background and Objective: Pseudomonas aeruginosa has become a frequent cause of nosocomial infections, particularly in intensive care units (ICUs). Many reports have documented high rates of resistance in this species to commonly-used broad-spectrum antibiotics. The aim of this study was to assess the in vitro activity of some a...

Urinary tract infection (UTI) is the commonest clinical condition encountered by the clinicians worldwide. The present research was conducted to find out bacterial pathogens responsible for UTI and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. The study was done in the Department of Microbiology, Nepalese Army Institute of Health Sciences (NAIHS), Kathmandu, Nepal. Total 450 clean catched midstr...
متن کاملBacteriological Profile and Antimicrobial Susceptibility Patterns of Bacteria Isolated from Pus/Wound Swab Samples from Children Attending a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal
In Nepal, little is known about the microbiological profile of wound infections in children and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns. Total of 450 pus/wound swab samples collected were cultured using standard microbiological techniques and the colonies grown were identified with the help of biochemical tests. The antimicrobial susceptibility testing was performed by Kirby-Bauer disc diff...
متن کاملHigh Burden of Antimicrobial Resistance among Bacteria Causing Pyogenic Wound Infections at a Tertiary Care Hospital in Kathmandu, Nepal
Pyogenic wound infections are one of the most common clinical entities caused and aggravated by the invasion of pathogenic organisms. Prompt and aggressive antimicrobial therapy is needed to reduce the burden and complications associated with these infections. In this study, we intended to investigate the common pathogens and their antimicrobial susceptibility patterns from the pyogenic wound i...
